Zoolights at the National Zoo

This holiday season, the Smithsonian's National Zoo will be at its brightest after dark as Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) hosts its winter lights event, ZooLights, powered by Pepco. The Zoo will shine with more than 50 custom-designed animal light sculptures made of thousands of environmentally friendly LED lights, which use about 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

The larger-than-life displays bring to “light” a variety of Zoo animals, including giant pandas, Asian elephants, kori bustards and golden lion tamarins. New displays will feature zebras, naked mole-rats and a blue crab with seaweed. Many sculptures from last year will be embellished with new elements, such as an animated ant hill for the giant anteater and fish for the sea lions.

ZooLights offers entertainment for all ages each night. Visitors will have the chance to meet keepers in some of our exhibits and learn about the Zoo's animals in winter. On the Main Stage, December 13-14 and December 18-21, Evergreen Theatre performs “A Midwinter's Tail,” a new play written just for the National Zoo about how animals cope with winter. On December 26-30, Barefoot Puppet Theatre performs “Little Red & The Gingerbread Man,” a seasonal favorite that combines two well-loved children's tale into an original fun-filled romp through the world of fairy tales.
